Hundreds of jobs are lost and the future of the Whyalla steelworks is in question after administrators confirmed the blast furnace used to make steel is shut down for good. 
State and federal governments have spent billions of dollars on the ailing facility, but it's going to take a new owner at last another $500 million to build a new electric furnace.
