Moses and Akhenaten not only lived during the same period, but may have been part of the same religious upheaval. Akhenaten introduced the worship of a single god in Egypt, something unprecedented in the country’s history. Shortly afterward, the story of Moses appears, a man with an Egyptian name who leads a people out of Egypt with the idea of a single god. The similarities in timing, ideas, and conflict have led some to suggest that Moses was a priest, a follower—or even Akhenaten himself. It cannot be proven, but the parallels are strong enough for the theory to continue to fascinate and generate debate.
