The Longyou Caves were discovered in 1992 when villagers in Shiyan Beicun pumped water out of an old pond and found an enormous carved chamber beneath the surface. More ponds were drained, revealing an entire system of large underground halls constructed by humans. The caves are located in Zhejiang Province near the Qu River, carved directly into hard siltstone. The area extends over approximately one square kilometer and includes at least 24 separate caves. No historical source describes these structures, making their origin and purpose unusually difficult to explain.
