The Roanoke Colony – The Colony That Vanished Without a Trace

The Roanoke Colony, founded in 1585 on Roanoke Island, mysteriously disappeared after losing contact with England, and no one knows what happened to its inhabitants.

The Roanoke Colony, also known as “The Lost Colony,” was an English settlement founded on Roanoke Island (in present-day North Carolina, USA) in 1585 by Sir Walter Raleigh. The colony quickly lost contact with England, and when a rescue expedition returned in 1590, the entire colony had disappeared without a trace. The only clues that were found were the word “Croatoan” carved into a tree and onto a piece of wood, which led to theories that the colonists had moved to a nearby island or had been absorbed into Indigenous tribes. What actually happened to the colony remains a mystery to this day.
